The Garden and Produce Competition

A splendid entry of 170 individual items across the 37 classes in this year’s Garden and Produce Competition ensured a very good display for those attending Wistanswick Fete this year and produced a good competition for the entrants. The Judges – Mr. and Mrs. I. Wright of Vennington, were kept busy for over an hour scrutinising the entries to determine whose produce was the best. In some categories this was not an easy task as The Victoria Sponge class attracted 12 entries ( won this year by the Fete Chairman, Mrs. Joan Townsin) and the Specimen Rose class, 14.

There was a considerable uplift in children’s entries this year and 12 children obtained some kind of award for their efforts. There was a new overall competition this year to find the “Best-in-show” based on three points for a first place, two for second and one for third and in the children’s section Miss Elizabeth Smith tied with Miss Verity Harrison for second place and the winner of the Wistanswick Junior Garden and Produce Competition Cup for 2003 was Miss Zoe Eardley of Rosehill.

Competition between the adults was keen in some of the vegetable classes, with good entries for carrots, herbs and potatoes. There was a good display of flowers presented despite the large quantity of rain we had to endure in the run-up to the Show. Mr. Ward’s lilies were outstanding winners in the “3 other flowers” class as was Mrs. Katrina Murray’s Specimen Rose in class 13. In the Senior Cup Competition Mrs. R. Maddox of Woodseaves was 4th with 9 points, 3rd was Mr Roger Bliss of Wistanswick with 17 points, 2nd with 20 points was Mrs Jean Bolton ( four 1sts and four 2nds) and the Winner with 25 points was Mrs. Carol Smith of Wistanswick and she took the Winner’s cup for the 2003 show.

Many thanks to the entrants for putting on such a good show and we hope to publish next year’s schedule on the internet at www.wistanswick.com in March 2004.
