The North Shropshire Broadband Campaign

Most residents of Market Drayton now has broadband. Through a successful campaign to make people aware of broadband run by a local resident with help from a local councillor the towns exchange was upgraded in July 2003.

Now for all the villages!

With your help it will be possible to get all our local exchanges upgraded to enable broadband. In order for BT to consider upgrading an exchange they must get 400 local residents to express interest in the service. That is where you can come in.
By clicking on the links below you will be taken to a site where you can register your interest. By registering you will increase the chances of getting your local exchange upgraded and so could soon be enjoying high speed internet access from your home or local business.
By registering your interest you are not in any way comitting yourself to take up the service or tying yourself to a supplier if the campaign is successful. When an exchange is upgraded you will be contacted to let you know but you will not be forced into taking up the service.

What is Broadband?

Very basically, broadband uses digital signals to transmit the data from the internet or e-mail to your PC. It uses your existing telephone line but because it is digital, it will not stop you using your phone as normal when conected to the internet. Your single telephone line will stay connected to the internet 24 hours a day but your phone can still be used to make outgoing and incoming calls.

How much does it cost?

The cost of broadband (as with anything else) depends on who you get it from and how much you want. The basic 512k (about 10 times faster than your normal dialup speed to the internet) can cost as little as £20 per month with some companies but the average is £26 per month. Usually, the cheaper services limit you to how much you can use your connection.
There is then even faster broadband connections available from some companies. The normal faster speeds are 1MB and 2MB and vary significantly in cost depending on who you buy the service from. Average costs are £50 for 1MB connections and £65 for 2MB. These are mainly aimed at business users so if you want to have these higher speeds you find that prices shown do not include VAT!
